DSD Cuts Down Steel I-Beam

DSD Cuts Down Steel I-Beam

The US Coast Guard loves DEEP SOUTH DIVERS!

Late one windy night, a large vessel coming in from offshore struck a channel marker in the Charleston Harbor. The impact damaged both the channel marker and the boat. Thankfully, the boat stayed afloat, but the channel marker was shattered and no longer operational.

To repair the damaged marker, the USCG dispatched their tender vessel – which builds, retrieves and repairs buoys and markers – to the site. They removed the marker, it’s signage and most of its structure, but were unable to remove the large steel I-beam that held it fast in the seabed below. What was left was a 14” x 14” x 12’ long steel I-beam sticking out of the water vertically, and posing a huge hazard to passing boats.

To prevent another boat strike, the Coast Guard put a buoy on I-beam, but it was a temporary measure. They called DEEP SOUTH DIVERS to cut the I-beam down.

Sight unseen, we were able to give them an estimate for the job and win the bid against many capable companies in Charleston.

We dived the site twice… First to inspect the I-beam and decide which method to employ to cut the protrusion, and a second time with the right equipment to do the job.

Here’s a video of SeaJay and Sven doing the job:

…And the looks on their faces when it was complete:

Nice job boys!
